This course introduces non-science majors to basic biological concepts including, but not limited to, the properties of life, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, evolution, biodiversity, and ecology. This introductory biology course for students interested in health science careers focuses on the concepts of chemistry, cell biology, metabolism, genetics, and regulation of gene expression. Not accepted toward the Biology major. Credit for both this course and BIOL 1110 may not be applied toward a degree program.

Biology 2101 covers fundamental principles in molecular cellular biology and molecular genetics. Emphasis is placed on biological molecule structure and function, cell structure, metabolism, gene function and gene expression. This is one of three core courses serving as pre-requisites for all upper division courses in Biology.

An introduction to 1) the fundamentals of evolution required to understand the origin of the diverse array of organisms observed in nature, 2) the diversity of structures and functions that have evolved to solve fundamental problems in organismal biology, and 3) the principles and characteristics of population, community, and ecosystem ecology.

This course is the first of two that serve as an introduction to human anatomy and physiology for Biology majors and allied health students. The course entails describing, explaining, and analyzing structure and function from the submicroscopic to the organismal level with emphasis on anatomic, directional, and sectional terminology, basic cellular structure and metabolism, tissue differentiation and characteristics, and organ system structure and function; Specifically the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.

This course is the second of two that serve as an introduction to human anatomy and physiology for biology majors and allied health students. The course entails describing, explaining, and analyzing structure and function from the submicroscopic to the organismal level with emphasis on specific cellular, tissue, and organ structure and physiology, and organ system structure and function; specifically the endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems. Additionally, an analysis of these concepts is included: fluid and electrolyte balance, pregnancy, growth and development from zygote to newborn, and heredity. Three lectures. Prerequisite: 2210.

This course introduces the basic principles of microbial structure, genetics, and physiology, virology, parasitology, disease, pathogenicity, epidemiology and immunology. Only some emphasis is given to basic biological principles. The course is designed for those obtaining a career in the health sciences. Not accepted toward the Biology major or minor. Credit for both this course and BIOL **351/**352L may not be applied toward a degree program. Prerequisite: ((1140 and 1140L) or 2110C) and (CHEM 1120C or (CHEM 1215 and CHEM 1215L)).

The Department of Biology Sophomore Seminar Series (BIOL 330, 331, 332) introduces UNM biology majors to the research interests of the faculty. BIOL 330 highlights faculty presenters who study topics that integrate biology and related sciences.

Cellular structure, genetics, physiology and ecology of microorganisms. Principles of bacterial techniques, host-parasite relationships and infection and immunity. Credit for both this course and BIOL 2305 may not be applied toward a degree program. This is a double-starred (**) level course and may be taken for graduate credit by students enrolled in a graduate program outside of the department. A graduate student enrolled in a double-starred course numbered below 500 may be required to complete extra work.

Original theoretical and/or experimental work under supervision. Work for the thesis is carried on throughout the senior year. A maximum of 4 credit hours may be applied toward the Biology major; additional credit hours contribute to upper-level Arts and Sciences requirements.

Interdisciplinary overview of how science museum resources are used to study change in human communities, natural, and physical systems over space and time. Course activities emphasize materials science, data science, and team science. Fulfills the INT breadth requirement of the Biology BS/BA degree.

Recent genomics advances have expanded biology to include more unusual model organisms. The new technologies that facilitate studying emerging models and the discoveries made from them will be explored. Fulfills the CMP breadth requirement of the Biology BS/BA degree.

This course provides detailed content on the organization, functioning, and development of ecological theory on community ecology, along with common methods to survey communities, and analyze and interpret community ecology data.. Field trip to Sevilleta LTER required. Fulfills the EEO breadth requirement for the Biology BS/BA degree.

This course will cover forest ecology topics ranging from individual organisms to ecosystems. You will learn about how disturbances, climate, and humans influence forest structure and function. Fulfills the EEO breadth requirement of the Biology BS/BA degree.

A detailed and critical study of how different genes are regulated during the life of an organism, principally at the level of transcription.
