Research Interests:

Astrobiology; evolution of complexity; contingency, convergence, and determinism in evolution; defining life; the Fermi paradox, natural history; teaching science

Profile:

I am interested in the fundamental questions of what life is and the possibilities of life in the universe. I focus on how life on Earth can be used to make predictions about non-Terran life and the limitations of our predictions. Additionally, I'm interested in how life emerges and complexifies over time, and the filters limiting the emergence of technologically advanced civilizations.
