Graduate student Katlin Schroeder, Professor Felisa Smith and collaborator Kate Lyons (Nebraska) co-authored a new paper in Science Magazine entitled "The influence of juvenile dinosaurs on community structure and diversity" that was published this week. The paper examines the differences between modern carnivore communities, which exhibit a range of body sizes in adults, and communities of carnivorous dinosaurs, which lack the small and intermediate body sizes. The authors conclude that the roles of small- and medium-sized carnivores were filled by the juveniles of very large bodied carnivorous dinosaurs.
