Ph.D. student Sarah Shrum Davis collaborates with ABQ Zoo on shigella outbreak

Research by Ph.D. student Sarah Shrum Davis helped shed light on the recent shigella outbreak at the Albuquerque Bio Park Zoo. Shrum Davis is the emerging infections program foodnet coordinator for the UNM Office of Community Health and an NMDOH enteric team lead, in addition to a member of Don Natvig's Lab in UNM Biology.
Based on their data published recently in Nature Communications, Shrum Davis and others were able to conclude the Shigella outbreak came from the same source, was introduced around February 2021, and possibly came from Texas.
