Convocation—Graduation Celebration

The Biology Department holds a Graduation Celebration each spring; this year, it will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019. If you have earned a degree between August of one year and August the following year, we invite you and your family to be a part of our celebration. Your attendance at this ceremony is a perfect way to celebrate your association with the Biology Department, and we look forward to seeing our graduating students on this very special day! This year's guest speaker will be Stephanie Garcia Richard, New Mexico's Commissioner of Public Lands.

Biology's Convocation is held following the 9:00 a.m. UNM Commencement Ceremony at the DreamStyle Arena (a.k.a. The Pit), which all graduates and their guests are encouraged to attend. The UNM program includes an address by a major state or national figure, the presentation of honorary degrees, and the recognization of UNM's graduates from all degree programs at all levels. For more information about UNM's Commencement ceremonies, please see the UNM Graduation web page.

Students must be on a current graduation list in order to sign-up for the UNM Commencement Ceremony. If you are a Summer graduate, you will need to complete and submit the Request To Participate in the University Commencement Ceremony form.

Diplomas:  Your official diploma will be mailed to the address on file for you with the Registrar, six to eight weeks after the end of the semester your degree is officially granted. If you would like your diploma held for pickup or mailed somewhere else, you need to contact the Registrar. Contact your advisor if you have any questions about your official graduation status.

Biology's Graduation Celebration is held outside in the Yale Mall east of the Biology Building (Castetter Hall). You are most welcome to have someone special (e.g., parents, husband/wife) accompany you to the podium to accept congratulations for earning your Biology degree. The schedule is:

12:15 p.m.
Participating Biology graduates (but not family members) meet in Biology Room 100 in caps and gowns.
1:00–2:00 p.m.
Biology Convocation Ceremony—Guest Speaker and Presentation of students and individual recognition of all B.A., B.S., M.S. & Ph.D. degree recipients.
2:00 p.m.–
Open House and Refreshments at the Biology Building.

In the semester you will graduate, be sure to sign up well ahead of time for Biology's Spring Convocation by submitting a Biology Department RSVP or by registering on the UNM Graduation web page. Further, we are asking our graduatiing Seniors to take an online Biology Majors Exit Survey to provide us with feedback about your educational experince while earning your Biology degree.

Biology Faculty can also sign up for the 9:00 a.m. UNM Commencement Ceremony at the DreamStyle Arena (a.k.a. The Pit) on the UNM Graduation web page or, if attending only the Biology Convocation, contact Anne Rice.
