Can I get Advanced Placement (AP) credit for Biology 201 and 202?

I’m a non-degree student.  Can I get financial aid from UNM?

I received a grade of C- in a Biology course. Will that course still count towards my Biology major (or minor)? What about a grade of C- in a supporting (Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics) course?

Is it possible for a student to put together his/her own minor?

I’m interested in graduating with Honors in Biology. How do I do this?

I'm interested in attending medical school after I graduate. What information is available to me as a pre-med student?

I'm interested in attending vet school after I graduate. What information is available to me as a pre-vet student?

I think I would like to get involved in some sort of research project. How do I do this?

I’m a non-degree student.  Can I get financial aid from UNM?

Non-degree students can receive financial aid from UNM, but only if the courses they are taking during the semester for which they're requesting financial aid are "pre-requisites" for a degree in their major.  This means that you cannot be taking courses that would count towards a biology degree during any semester for which you seek financial aid as a non-degree student.

Can I get Advanced Placement (AP) credit for Biology 201 and 202?

Students may receive credit for biology courses by taking AP exams. Credit is awarded as follows:

AP Exam Score
Credit
3
Biol. 123/124L (4 hrs.)
4
Biol. 201 (4 hrs.)
5
Biol. 201 + 4 hrs. of lower-division Biology elective (8 hrs. total)

Students cannot use CLEP exams to receive credit for classes they wish to apply towards a Biology minor or major.

I received a grade of C- in a Biology course. Will that course still count towards my Biology major (or minor)? What about a grade of C- in a supporting (Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics) course?

Students pursuing a major or minor in Biology must receive a grade of C or better in all courses that they wish to count towards the Biology major or minor. A grade of C- in any of these courses means that the course must be retaken until a grade of C or better is earned.

Is it possible for a student to develop his/her own minor?

Yes, a motivated student can develop a unique program of studies for a minor through the Distributed Minor plan. In the Biology Department we have had several students create their own individualized Distributed Minor involving a selection of courses from the Departments of Psychology, Nutrition, Biochemistry, and Anthropology. Another student with an interest in paleoecology created a Distributed minor with a selection of courses from the Departments of Anthropology, Geology, and Geography. However, not many students choose this option since Distributed Minors require 30 credit hours of course work in contrast to the 20 credit hours for most 'regular' minors, and there are other significant restrictions.

The short version of the the requirements that must be satisfied when developing a Distributed Minor is as follows (see page 113 of the UNM catalog for details):

· The student, in consultation with a departmental advisor, chooses 30-36 credits of courses outside his/her major.

· Classes should come from more than one department.

· One half of the course work in the DM needs to be 300-400 level.

· The DM plan has to be filed with A&S at least two semester before graduation.

· Students need to list courses, the course grade (if completed), or the semester they plan to take the class, and have a paragraph describing why they chose those particular classes to define the Distributed Minor.

· Classes required for a student's major cannot count towards a DM. For example, the chemistry, math, and physics courses required for a Biology major cannot be used as part of a DM.
