Introduced Water Snakes of California

Photos of non-native Nerodia species found in California

At least two species of non-native water snake (Genus Nerodia) have established breeding populations within Northern and Southern California. Water snakes are native to the Southeastern US, and the introduced populations pose a potential threat to native garter snakes, freshwater fishes, and amphibians. Click on photos for larger images.
