Five UNM IMSD Students Receive Awards at SACNAS National Conference

Five IMSD students from the University of New Mexico received awards for their poster presentations at the SACNAS National Conference in Seattle, Washington. Wiley Barton, Matthew Medina, Alice Martinic, Daniel Moezzi, and Megan Hudgell were awarded cash prizes and certificates of recognition for their poster presentations.

The SACNAS National Conference was held October 11-14, 2012, at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center, and featured poster presentations by over 1,000 students. In addition to presenting posters, IMSD students attended scientific talks and workshops on professional development to guide them through the process of application to graduate school.

UNM IMSD students also toured the campus of the University of Washington, visiting faculty and touring research facilities in the Department of Biology and the Department of Genome Sciences. A dozen former UNM IMSD students are currently enrolled in graduate programs at the University of Washington.

2012 Biomedical Research Symposium

Undergraduate and graduate students conducting biomedical research at the University of New Mexico, including IMSD students, presented results of their research at the 2012 Biomedical Research Symposium on Friday, August 10, 2012, at the University of New Mexico Science and Math Learning Center. The annual symposium was sponsored by the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD), Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC), and the Post-baccalaureate Research and Education Program (PREP). These programs provide research opportunities and mentoring to UNM undergraduates and graduates and prepare students for admission to Ph.D. program and research careers.

Student researchers presented twenty-two slide talks and ten posters on a diverse array of topics. The presentations were open to the public, and faculty, students, and family members attended.
