Immunobiology of Invertebrates,
Particularly of Snail Responses to Schistosome Parasites

Schistosomes and other larval trematodes, as pervasive and fitness-affecting parasites of gastropods, serve as ideal probes to reveal the immunological mechanisms by which invertebrates respond to relevant pathogens. Studies of snail responses to schistosomes have revealed the presence of remarkably diverse snail hemolymph molecules that are up-regulated following exposure to infection and that are involved in dictating compatibility between snails and their schistosome parasites. Additional RNA-seq studies underway have identified several different components of the snail response to schistosome infection.
