On October 1, 2005, Dr. Maggie Werner-Washburne was presented the Distinguished Scientist Award at the national meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Latinos and Native Americans in the Sciences (SACNAS). This award is given each year at the national meeting to recognize members who have dedicated themselves to science, education, and mentoring. It is for senior researchers with distinguished research careers and who have worked to help diversify the sciences.

“This award was a complete surprise,” said Dr. Werner-Washburne. “It is such an honor to be recognized by ones peers for work that has been so rewarding in itself. I have been lucky to have great colleagues and students here at UNM, Sandia and elsewhere, and I am happy for whatever honor this brings to New Mexico.”
