Eimeria rhynchonycteridis Lainson, 1968

Type host: Rhynchonycteris naso (Wied-Neuwied, 1820), Brazilian long-nosed bat.

Other hosts: None reported to date.

Type locality: CENTRAL AMERICA: Belize, Cayo District, Baking Pot, along the banks of the Belize River.

Geographic distribution: CENTRAL AMERICA: Belize, Cayo.

Description of oocyst: Oocyst shape: spheroidal; number of walls: 1; wall thickness: not given; wall characteristics: smooth, very delicate, colorless; L x W: 25.5; L/W ratio: 1.0; M: absent; OR: absent; PG: absent. Distinctive features of oocyst: none.

Description of sporocysts and sporozoites: Sporocyst shape: ovoidal, with delicate, thin wall; L x W: 15.2 x 8.1; L/W ratio: 1.9; SB: present, small, nipple-like and in which lies a small, highly refractile granule; SSB: absent; PSB: absent; SR: present; SR characteristics: scattered, delicate globules of various size; SP: lie at ends of sporocyst and are markedly recurved at their ends, RB apparently absent (line drawing). Distinctive features of sporocyst: delicate wall, SB with highly refractile granule in or below (?) it.

Prevalence: 4/9 (44%).

Sporulation: Exogenous. Oocysts sporulated in 24 hr in 2% aqueous (w/v) potassium dichromate solution at 26-28 C.

Prepatent and patent periods: Unknown.

Site of infection: Uncertain, but probably the small intestine.

Materials deposited: None.

Remarks: The sporulated oocysts of this species differ from those of all other eimerians from bats by the delicate wall of both oocysts and sporocysts and by the presence of the highly refractile granule in/under the SB (this granule may be a SSB).
