Eimeria boae Prasad, 1963

Type host: Corallus caninus (L., 1758) (synonym Boa canina), Emerald tree boa.

Other hosts: None to date.

Type locality: Unknown. This species was found in a snake in the Zoological Gardens, London (origin apparaently South America).

Geographic distribution: EUROPE: England, London Zoological Gardens.

Description of oocyst: Oocyst shape: ; ovoidal number of walls: 2; wall thickness: not given; wall characteristics: colorless, with outer layer much thicker, inner layer membranous; L x W: 25.5 x 21.5 (24-27 x 20-23); L/W ratio: 1.1 (1.1-1.2); M: absent; OR: absent; PG: absent. Distinctive features of oocyst: sporocysts do not fill internal space of oocyst and absence of both OR and PG.

Description of sporocysts and sporozoite: Sporocyst shape: ovoidal to ellipsoidal; L x W: 10-12.5 x 7.5-9; L/W ratio: not given; SB: present as a well-developed distinct nipple-like structure at pointed end; SSB: presumably absent; PSB: absent; SR: present; SR characteristics: large mass of granules; SZ: fusiform, 7.5 x 3, separated by SR; one RB present at posterior end of each SZ. Distinctive features of sporocysts: dinstinct SB, SR and fusiform SZ.

Prevalence: 1/1 (100%); 6 consecutive samples from a single animal were positive for these oocysts.

Sporulation: Presumably exogenous.

Prepatent and patent periods: Unknown.

Site of infection: Unknown. Oocysts found in feces.

Endogenous development: Unknown.

Materials deposited: None.

Remarks: This species has not been reported since its initial description by Prasad (1963) and may represent a pseudoparasite derived from prey items. However, until this can be documented, we will consider it a parasite of the snake.
