It is this proverb that exemplifies the true purpose of Biology 461L. To truly learn something that will stay with you for a lifetime, we believe you must be involved with what you are studying. The details of tropical biology can be daunting for many students because they have never actually been in the tropics; reading books and seeing pictures can only take you so far. The Biology Department at UNM provides students with a unique opportunity to get first hand experience and knowledge of tropical biology by taking them on a 10-day field trip to Belize, Central America, during UNM's spring break. Once in Belize, students spend their time at two field stations: Possum Point, a 23 acre riverine facility, located on the Sittee River in the middle of a tropical deciduous rain forest, and Wee Wee Caye Marine Lab, on a small red mangrove island located approximately 9 miles off the coast of southern Belize in the Stann Creek District. The first 8 weeks of Bio 461L are composed of intensive lectures covering: basic geography and geology of the tropics; mangrove, turtle grass, and coral communities and their interactions with one another; specific history, politics, and the biology of Belize; common plants and animals of the tropics, presented by experts in their field of study. A comprehensive test and the trip to Belize follow. Upon return to UNM, the last 8 weeks are filled with 45 minute presentations by each student on a topic of their choice that in some way pertains to tropical biology.  See Course Information for specific assignments, grading, costs, and a tentative schedule. This course is open to all and is presented in a way that makes it beneficial to both majors and non-majors alike. It is a "must-take" course for anyone interested in rainforest ecology, marine biology, conservation biology, or Central American history.
