PREFACE

This page was created to provide biology grad students a central source of information on local funding options. It may be a little out of date, but the general information should hold. For information on external funding sources, go to the MIDAS grants search engine at http://research.unm.edu/databases/ in the Office of Research Services.

 



THROUGH BGSA

BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT ACCOUNTtop

  • WHAT: Money from the department,recycling, and t-shirt sales.
  • WHEN: Anytime.
  • FOR: Anything. BGSA discretion. Often for computer lab supplies.
  • HOW: Usual departmental procedures to charge items to the BGSA account.
  • FROM: Biology department.


PRO-RATED BENEFIT (PB) FUNDStop

  • WHAT: 40% of the GSA fee ( $16 = $6.40) per student per semester. About $775 per semester. May increase to 60% soon (~ $1160)
  • WHEN: no later than 31 May each year.
  • FOR: anything: often page costs, reprints, computer equipment, darkroom supplies, etc. BGSA discretion.
  • HOW: First, BGSA chair or treasurer sends a memo to GPSA President, indicating (1)name of the department,(2) number of graduate students enrolled for that semester, (3) UNM account number into which we should request funds to be transferred,(4) your campus address, and (5) your position in the organization. Takes about two weeks. The money is spent at the discretion of BGSA (see below).

REIMBURSEMENT OF PUBLICATION COSTS

  • WHAT: BGSA has a limited amount of money to reimburse department graduate students for publication and presentation costs.
  • WHEN: Requests for reimbursements are processed once each semester: December 1 (Fall); May 1 (Spring). Forms (and questions or comments) should be addressed to the current BGSA publications representative. Resubmission of rejected requests the following semester is permitted.

PROJECTS FUNDStop

  • WHAT: Up to $500
  • WHEN: Any time
  • FOR: Events that promote graduate student involvement and other endeavors that benefit the professional growth of graduate students. This includes, but is not limited to lectures, workshops, symposia and cultural events. Will not fund salaries, class or course projects, capital aquisitions, including equipment, party-affiliated political or religious groups, or ongoing events previously funded two times by the Projects Committee.

FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS

 

GRAC: GRADUATE RESEARCH ALLOCATIONS COMMITTEE GRANTStop

  • WHAT: $400 for research, $150 for travel, per semester. $1500 PhD student career max, $1000 MS student career max. for research.
  • WHEN: One week after SRAC is due. Spring 2008 deadline Noon Feb. 29.
  • FOR: Research and travel - separate apps. Read directions carefully.
  • HOW: Application forms are online (links below), or in the forms drawer in the biology main office. Return to mailbox of GRAC committee chair. Must apply for SRAC as well.

SRAC: STUDENT RESEARCH ALLOCATIONS COMMITTEE GRANTStop

  • WHAT: Up to $500 per academic year. Generally, a total of $8,000 in the fall, $9,000 in the spring, $3,000 in the summer are given out.
  • WHEN: Noon,5th Friday of Spr/Fall/Summer semesters. Spring 2008 Feb. 22.
  • FOR: Research related to the completion of a degree, other research of interest to the applicant, trips to conferences.

ST: SPECIALIZED TRAVEL GRANTStop

  • WHAT: up to $300 per academic year
  • WHEN: same as SRAC: noon, 5th Friday of Spr/Fall/ Summer semesters.
  • FOR: Travel expenses *not* covered under the SRAC grants. This includes travel to interviews, clinicals, anything that is *not* classified as a conference.

  • WHAT: up to $5,000 for high-priority projects, $2,500 for general research projects

  • RPT: RESEARCH PROJECT TRAVEL GRANTStop

  • WHAT: up to $1,000 per academic year.
  • WHEN: Fall funding: September 15, 2006; Spring funding: January 31, 2007.
  • FOR: Research and project expenses (such as materials and equipment), and /or travel expenses (to collect data, to attend seminars, colloquia, conferences, professional meetings, libraries or other research facilities in or out of the country) for which a genuine need is demonstrated.

GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMtop

  • WHAT: $7,500 over 2 semesters.
  • WHEN: 5:00 p.m. March 1.
  • FOR: Living stipend.
  • HOW: Info and App online.

  • TO: New Mexico residents who are members of groups that are underrepresented in one's field and that need financial assistance.


GROVE AND OTHER BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPStop

  • Submit only one application to apply for any and all of the departmental scholarships.
  • Applications should be submitted to Cheryl Martin as a hard copy.(Biology Main Office, 167 Castetter Hall).
  • Deadline: noon, Friday, March 14, 2008.
  • Important Guidelines and Application Form Online.
  1. THE MELINDA BEALMER SCHOLARSHIP: This award is to support a graduate student to present research at a conference.
  2. THE CLIFFORD CRAWFORD SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is to support a graduate student in conducting research on the Rio Grande Bosque (or some area of water/watershed related biology).
  3. ALVIN R. AND CAROLINE G. GROVE DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP: This $9,500 award provides a Ph.D. student with one semester release time from a Teaching or Research Assistantship so that he/she can concentrate on scholarly pursuits, such as research and/or writing. Applicants must have been advanced to candidacy prior to the date for submission of application. Student should be embarked on a well-defined research program. Criteria used in judging applications include scholarship, academic promise, and quality of ongoing or completed research.
  4. ALVIN R. AND CAROLINE G. GROVE SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS: This $3500 award provides graduate students with financial support to pursue their research during the summer. Support is based on the quality of the proposal, the activities of the ongoing research and need of the applicant.
  5. ALVIN R. AND CAROLINE G. GROVE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS: This award provides graduate students with resources to initiate or continue research projects, and/or to attend conferences to present their research. Awards may range from $500-$2000.
  6. THE LYNN A. HERTEL GRADUATE RESEARCH AWARD: The goal of this $2000 award is to support the research program of a current Biology Department graduate student, thus assisting the student to complete their thesis or dissertation research. This award can be used to purchase research supplies or equipment and to support travel to field sites or to scientific meetings, all activities expected to be part of the student’s graduate research program. The funds can not be used for salary to support the scholarship recipient.
  7. THE HARRY WAYNE SPRINGFIELD SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is to support a graduate student in pursuit of research in botany with a focus on plant ecology.
  8. THE DHARM VIREO PELLEGRINI RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is to support an undergraduate or a graduate student in pursuit of ornithology field research for the benefit of the Museum of southwestern Biology.
  9. THE JOSEPH GAULIN SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is to support an undergraduate or a graduate student in pursuit of research in mammalogy.


REQUIRING DEPT. NOMINATION


GRADUATE DEAN'S DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPStop

  • WHAT: $8,000 for 9 months. No tuition or fees.
  • WHEN: 5:00 p.m. on March 1, 2006.
  • FOR: To provide one year financial assistance to students nearing completion of a terminal (PhD, EdD, or MFA) degree. Five fellowships are awarded annually.
  • HOW: Info and App online.

NM GRADUATE SCHOLARS AWARD (formerly 3% SCHOLARSHIP)top

  • WHAT: In-state tuition for up to nine credit hours per semester for Fall and Spring
  • WHEN: anytime between Jan and May.  Biology Application deadline: 5 pm on March 3, 2006, in Biology Chair's mailbox.
  • FOR: in-state tuition for up to nine hours of graduate study during each the Fall and Spring semesters
