IMSD (Initiatives to Maximize Student Diversity):
an NIH-funded, 2-year, PhD-prep program

Native Americans, Hispanics, African-Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Non-minorities are all part of our IMSD family!

We build strength through diversity and discovering what YOU bring to science!

  • Mentoring: Nationally recognized mentors and faculty leaders with extensive track records for student success. Students learn how to do research as well as discover what they bring to the table in science and in life.

  • Leadership: IMSD works to train leaders. Students in our program typically have their choice of top graduate schools, opportunities to be co-authors on scientific publications, and get to know faculty from top institutions.

  • Scientific education: Since 2004, IMSD has produced 220 minority PhDs (6 in 2010); 115 IMSD students have be co-authors in 75 papers in top journals; and each year, IMSD students win awards for their presentations at national scientific meetings and gain recognition for their outstanding achievements and contributions to UNM.

  • Financial support: IMSD students are supported for their research (up to $11,400 per year) and receive funds for research and travel to national scientific meetings.
